logothetidis

Scientific responsible and founder of the Laboratory of Thin Films - Nanosystems & Nanometrology (LTFN) is Prof. Stergios Logothetidis.
The research interests of Prof. S. Logothetidis include the following:
Organic Electronics: Development of active (organic semiconductors) and passive materials (transparent electrodes, barrier layers) and fabrication of Organic Electronic devices that include Organic PhotoVoltaic cells - OPVs, Organic Thin Film Transistors - OTFTs, Organic Light Emitting Diodes – OLEDs, Biosensors onto flexible and rigid substrates, by vacuum, wet and printing methods in batch and roll-to-roll (r2r) configuration. Investigation of optical, electrical, structural properties of the organic semiconductors & conductors and charge transport mechanisms.
Thin Films & Nanosystems Fabrication of advanced nanoscale materials, e.g, super-hard carbon structures, diamond-like carbon, nitrides, metal oxides, boron and silicon nanostructures, in the form of multifunctional thin films, multi-layers and super-lattices on inorganic and flexible polymeric substrates.
NanoMedicine: Development of functionalized polymers and biocompatible materials and investigation of the adsorption of biological agents (e.g. proteins, DNA, blood cells) onto their surface by non-destructive optical techniques. Synthesis of nanoparticles, and scaffolds for drug delivery and tissue regeneration
Optical & Sensing Technology: Development of optical sensing techniques for the in-situ, in-line & real-time monitoring of thin-film growth and plasma treatment with non-destructive characterization by Spectroscopic Ellipsometry in a wide spectral region from the InfraRed (900-4000 cm-1) to the Visible and far UltraViolet (0.7-6.5 eV)
Nano-mechanical/tribological properties of super-hard thin films, nanostructured and soft materials and living matter by NanoIndentation, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Near Field Optical Microscopy (SNOM).
Plasma Treatment & Surface Nano-Engineering (ion beam and plasma processes, surface treatment & activation of carbon-based ceramic, and polymer materials and membranes with ion beams),
Computational modeling of thin film growth and Optical and Electronic properties of materials by Modeling-Theory-Simulation methods (thin-film growth, ion beam process, micro-/nano-machining, properties of complex and anisotropic materials, optical and electronic properties).
His research activity is complemented by over 880 papers and review articles in International Journals & Conferences, and his over 5500 citations by other researchers. He has given more than 130 oral presentations as an Invited Speaker in International Conferences. He is a referee in more than 30 International Scientific Journals and in tens of International Conferences.
Prof. S. Logothetidis has extensive R&D experience through collaborations with 60 international research entities, such as Universities, Research Institutes and Centers. He is the coordinator of 70 European and National funded R&D projects (STREP, NoE, IP, GROWTH, IST, BRITE, ESPRIT, CRAFT,TMR, EKBAN, STRIDE, PENED, PAVET etc.) in which a large number of National and International entities (Universities, Institutes and Industry) have participated.
In 2002 he organized (together with colleagues from Depts. of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Gen. Dept. of Polytechnic School) the Interdisciplinary Post-Graduate Program "Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies" (N&N) (http://nn.physics.auth.gr), in which he is the Director. This is the first PostGraduate Course in Europe that deals with the emerging field of Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies.
In 2003 he has founded and he is coordinator of the Research & Innovation Network - Nano|Net (www.nano-net.gr), which has more than 400 members from all over the world.
He has organized several National and International Conferences. Since 2003 he organizes the "International Conference on Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies", whereas for 8 continuous years he is co-organizing the "Global Plastic Electronics Conference", and the "International Symposium on Flexible Organic Electronics" and the "International Summer School on Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies".
Within the frame of his academic activities, Professor S. Logothetidis currently teaches the following of pre- and post-graduate level courses: Solid State Physics, Optics, Advanced Materials Growth, Surface Physics and Applications, Nanomechanics, Optical Properties and Spectroscopy, Thin Films and Vacuum Technology, Micro & Nano Fabrication, Technology – Innovation.
Several books & monographs of Prof. S. Logothetidis, such as "Introduction to Advanced Materials Growth" , "Thin Films and Vacuum Technology", "Optical properties of Solids" and "Technology - Materials and Social - economic environment" are distributed to under- and post-graduates at Physics Department.
Prof. S. Logothetidis supervised more than 18 Ph.D. theses carried out in the LTFN, and more than 130 MSc theses. Also, he coordinates the research of 30 Post-Doctoral researchers.
He has trained numerous researchers and scientific collaborators at the LTFN, Max Planck Institute Stuttgart and at the Synchrotron Radiation Lab BESSY, Berlin in subjects that are related to his scientific activities.
He is member of Materials Research Society (MRS), European MRS, Optical Society of America (OSA), European Physical Society (EPS), European Synchrotron Radiation Society (ESRS), Plastic Electronics, the Hellenic Physical Society (HPS), Hellenic Society of Condensed Matter Technology (HSCMT), Hellenic Society of Ceramics (HSC).
